Wind driven effects on the fine-scale flight behaviour of dynamic soaring wandering albatrosses

چکیده

Wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans are among the largest flying birds. Their energy-efficient dynamic soaring flight allows them to travel large distances by exploiting gradient in wind strength above sea surface. We used bio-logging devices study behaviour of wandering albatrosses, deriving roll (bank) angles from video and tri-axial magnetometers, flapping events accelerometers. Albatrosses mostly experienced westerly winds coming their left during outbound flights colonies right when returning. They compensated for differences speed varying predominantly turning into wind, resulting a net displacement that was perpendicular wind. Flapping influenced direction, with birds spending more time light head winds. often occurred at upper turn cycle, stage previously considered devoid flapping. There also evidence sexual behaviour, females less than males. Males almost exclusively take off winds, whereas utilized cross as well. These results add our knowledge show how react fields fine scale.

Experimental verification of dynamic soaring in albatrosses.

Dynamic soaring is a small-scale flight manoeuvre which is the basis for the extreme flight performance of albatrosses and other large seabirds to travel huge distances in sustained non-flapping flight. As experimental data with sufficient resolution of these small-scale movements are not available, knowledge is lacking about dynamic soaring and the physical mechanism of the energy gain of the ...

Flight speed and performance of the wandering albatross with respect to wind

Background Albatrosses and other large seabirds use dynamic soaring to gain sufficient energy from the wind to travel large distances rapidly and with little apparent effort. The recent development of miniature bird-borne tracking devices now makes it possible to explore the physical and biological implications of this means of locomotion in detail. Here we use GPS tracking and concurrent reana...

Impact of changing wind conditions on foraging and incubation success in male and female wandering albatrosses.

Wind is an important climatic factor for flying animals as by affecting their locomotion, it can deeply impact their life-history characteristics. In the context of globally changing wind patterns, we investigated the mechanisms underlying recently reported increase in body mass of a population of wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) with increasing wind speed over time. We built a foraging...
